Green homes are much better than conventional homes – but what makes a home green?

Typically, a green home is an energy efficient home that at minimum saves at least 30% in energy costs versus a conventional new home (and savings can be significantly higher), conserves water, protects the surrounding site environment, uses non-toxic paints and finishes, and thus creates a healthy living space for you and your family.

A few benefits of working with an architect focused on the sustainable aspects of design and construction of your new home are that he or she will: 1) design your home to maximize spatial requirements as well as energy and water consumption; 2) design the home to limit the negative impact of the building on the immediate environment; and 3) explore various green technologies, renewable energy systems, green building products.

In order to reap the savings associated with building a green home, though, it is important to hire professionals who are experts in the green building field. Interview and hire an architect who is a LEED accredited professional, even if you are not looking to have your new home LEED certified.A green home starts with a green home design, or sustainable design, addressing the elements of geography, site, water efficiency, energy, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

Throughout the design and construction processes your green architect and builder will educate you on the operation and maintenance of the green materials and systems you selected for your energy efficient home. These benefits and savings will begin during the construction process and continue for the life of the home!

Your builder is also an important part of your green team. Interview numerous builders (at least three) and visit homes both completed and under construction. Ask what makes the house green, as well as specific questions about the systems and materials. A green builder will be able to offer simple explanations and give recommendations as to best products to use.

1. Use lighting to alter the sense of size and shape of your rooms. Lighting up one wall of a narrow room can make it appear wider, or you can make a high ceilinged room feel more intimate by using lamps that direct the light downward.

2. Use lighting to create distinct areas. Create a cozy atmosphere around the dining table and separate it from the surrounding room using a low-hung, down light or chandelier. This can be particularly effective in open-plan living to create a distinct dining space. Indeed, lighting is a great way to create separation between areas of different use, or in areas where the use changes. Bright ambient lighting can be used in an area where children play during the day and then be replaced by softer lighting for adult relaxation in the evening using a dimmer switch and wall lights or lamps.

3. Use accent lighting to highlight decorative features. Plants, alcoves, statues, architectural features, and even fish tanks can be lit creatively to make a dramatic focal point in a room. Framed artwork can be accented using halogen track lighting or a picture light. Highlight china or collectibles using halogen strip lighting in the china cabinet.

4. Make sure your light switches are in the right place. You don’t want to have to cross a darkened room to turn the lights on! Think about where you are likely to be sitting or where you are in the room when you want to turn on the lights or use the dimmer switch. Remote controls are always an option.

5. Always have safety in mind when designing your home lighting scheme. Use the services of trained electricians if you want to do any rewiring or installation of new light fixtures or switches. These are not DIY jobs. Electricians can also give advice at the planning stage about aspects such as what electrical wiring is required to achieve your desired home lighting results. The stairs and the kitchen are two areas where function really must take priority, but that doesn’t mean lighting in these areas can’t be attractive too.

The main reason that the kitchen can be problematic is because it can encourage a destructive flow of energy. The focal point of the kitchen is the oven which represents fire. However the majority of the other large items in the kitchen are all water based. Think about the average kitchen. Normally it will contain a fridge, freezer, washing machine, sink and dishwasher. The fire energy from the oven can be overcome with water energy if steps are not taken to provide the oven with some much needed support, leading to jerky and destructive energy in the kitchen and possible fractious relationships between the occupants of the home.

Fortunately there are a number of ways in which to provide support to the oven to promote a positive flow of chi. Some of these support tools may already be in place without you having to do anything at all. If your oven is on a south facing wall then it will automatically be strengthened by it’s placement in the fire area of the room. In the same way strength will be gained if the kitchen is in the south east or south areas of the home. If your oven or kitchen is not in one of these directions then you can use colour to provide support. Green is an excellent colour for a kitchen as green represents wood which supports fire whilst taking it’s own energy from water. To introduce green to your kitchen you do not necessarily have to paint the walls. Introducing some green kitchen items like utensil jars, biscuit barrels and cups, plates and bowls can work just as well. Red can also work well in a kitchen but should be used sparingly as you do not want to overdo the fire element. In our own kitchen which faces south I have a large red and green fruit bowl displayed in one corner to help strengthen the fire element.

One of the most important problems that needs to be overcome relating to the oven is if it is directly next to water, for example if the oven and sink are next to each other. If this is the case you will need to bring in some sort of barrier between them. This can be done by placing crystals in a bowl between oven and the sink. Excellent crystals to use are crystals which represent the element wood or fire like Carnelian and Citrine which can be placed in a small decorative wooden bowl or box. If there is really no room between the oven and the sink, fridge or dishwasher then you will need to place the crystals on top of the water based element, or in the case of the sink behind the sink.

In fact changing the color and/or texture of a ceiling can by itself change the entire look and feel of the room as a whole.

Ceiling Colors and Finishes

Ceilings do not have to be white. In fact white is quite a poor ceiling color choice as it will attract dirt and dust easily. How many of us really bother to climb up to wash our ceilings when giving the walls a once over as part of a spring clean?

Darker ceilings can add a sense of warmth to large room, especially if it is furnished sparsely and smaller rooms can be opened up with a few coats of a light, pastel colored ceiling paint.

The type of paint you choose for a ceiling can be as important as the color you opt to use. If you are planning to have your ceiling painted a darker color opt for a gloss or eggshell finish to impart a reflective light. On the other hand if you have a ceiling that is textured in some way – especially for acoustic or popcorn ceilings – a matte finish paint allows the texture to shine through as it should.

Painting a Ceiling

Even if they are happy to tackle painting a few walls themselves many homeowners are sensible enough to leave painting the ceiling to a professional, since it really is a messy, tricky and potentially rather dangerous job. If you are hoping to add texture to your ceiling as well hiring a professional painter is the best way to ensure that you get the look you want.

When selecting kitchen curtains you will make the decision based on the fabric, color, and shape. There are multiple fabrics from synthetic to cotton and heavy to lightweight available. Generally you will want to consider a lightweight fabric and cotton that is ideal. You can enhance the curtains with the use of various designs and shapes. If you provide a curtain lining it can act as an extra barrier of protection against the elements, including light, heat, and cold. Make sure the curtains are preshrunk so as to not loose the original shape.

The color of your curtain is one of, if not the most important factor in selecting a kitchen curtain. Consider the color of the wall and the other kitchen fittings. Make sure the color is pleasing but impacts the room in a way that makes it seem larger. Make sure you try a window to test before selecting your color.

Measure the size of the windows to determine the length of your kitchen curtains. The shape should flow with the kitchen and the length of the curtain needs to be practical. Remember that you cook and eat in this room.

The three most popular curtains for the kitchen are country, contemporary, and classic curtains. Many get hung up on which flavor to lean towards when reviewing different curtain ideas. The best advice I’ve came across yet is to not be in a rush and take a trusted friend for advice. Not only is it rewarding but often two heads come up with better overall result than one when it comes to coming up with creative curtain ideas and themes.

The final part to try to decide is that of the curtain hardware. Many think of curtain rods as something of an afterthought. The reality is your choice of curtain hardware can say just as much as the curtains. Choosing the right rod can really accent great curtains but also can totally take away from what otherwise would be a nice look. Be sure to think through your choice as replacing rods can be expensive and time consuming. However ultimately if you can find a nice marriage between your curtain ideas and your curtain hardware you will be in great shape.

Finding baby furniture like bedroom sets, kid dressers, tables and chairs and many more that can guarantee comfort, safety and beauty: rolled into one – is everything a parent could ask for. It leaves them with a peace of mind in knowing that these can provide the ultimate safety standards that their children truly deserve.

There are wide ranges of kid furniture available in the market today and there is a wide range of selection for parents to choose from. The most in demand however amongst this baby furniture are the bedroom sets that every child would essentially need. Bedroom sets are available in many baby furniture stores including those that sell online. Many of these bedroom sets usually go with themes such that of fairytales, winter wonderland, and many elaborate themes those parents would want for their babies’ bedrooms to have. The Hillsdale – Westfield Bed set is widely popular nowadays for its classic cottage-feel that brings forth warmth and coziness that generally attracts the many. Apart from that, the meticulous details of the curved headboard and stylishly cut footboard along with the delightful off-white wash finish really gives this baby bedroom furniture set that cheerfulness and charisma that makes it a great must-have for a child’s bedroom. These kids bedroom furniture sets can be very pricey however, quality, safety and comfort really goes along with them.

For parents who are looking for bedroom furniture sets for their older kids, the Powell Monster Bedroom Twin/Full Bunk Bed is the best way to go. Like the Hillsdale – Westfield bed set, it can be a little expensive than the regular furniture sets with a starting price of $ 608. This kid’s furniture set includes a nightstand, a twin size upper bunk and a full size bed at the bottom. What’s great about this furniture set is that it comes in various colors and styles that are suitable for every bedroom taste. Powell Monster also has extra storage underneath the full size bed that can provide organization and spare extra bedroom space which is a huge advantage especially for a small size bedroom. You not only get to buy stylish, durable and safe kid furniture but also one that is functional in terms of usage and storage.

Choosing the best bed furniture set for your child’s bedroom is crucial because this is where they sleep on every night and spend most of their time in the later years. It has to be comfortable, safe and durable that will last your investment a long time. Kids’ bedroom furniture sets should also reflect your child’s individual personality that can help them grow into better individuals in the long run by providing them their own personal space that exudes a home haven for them. If cost comes along with safety, comfort and durability, why choose the cheaper ones? Your child deserves the very best and seeing them grow happy is priceless.

When it comes to choosing the type of laminate flooring that will suit your project best, there are a number of variables to consider. First of all and most obviously, is the finish. Now available in so many different high-quality finishes, choosing the right one can appear daunting at first to someone who’s not sure. Popular finishes include: maple, oak, pine, cherry, mahogany, stone, slate, and even concrete. If you are looking for a modern, clean, bright aesthetic to you space then you are mostly like better off with a maple or oak finish, which tend to be lighter in tone and have less prominent imperfections and grain marks. If however, you are after a more classic, rustic appeal, then do consider a darker wood finish such as hickory, pine, cherry or mahogany. These finishes tend to be on the richer side of the tone spectrum, ideal for use where darker, earthier colours are being introduced to the space, and also tend to offer a more defined and characteristic grain pattern.

As well as choosing your favourite finish, you will also need to choose the right type of laminate flooring for the space you will be laying it in. Laminate flooring is generally speaking both highly versatile and highly robust, offering significant durability and scratch-resistance even in high-traffic areas of the home such as hallways. It is still important however to choose the right type of laminate for the right space. Laminate flooring is available in wear ratings, which is useful to bear in mind, and products often vary in terms of their manufacturer’s warranty. If you expect your new laminate floor to experience high traffic, do be sure to choose one that offers a generous warranty, to cover you for the most about of time.

Other factors to bear in mind when choosing laminate flooring include the pack quantity, board size, fitting profile, and FSC approval. Pack quantities and board sizes do vary, so be sure you check the dimensions of the boards, and how many come per pack. You will likely find that some are better value than others, and come in larger pack sizes. Fitting profiles tend not to vary considerably, and nowadays, most tile and wood flooring specialists only sell flooring with easy-to-install profile systems. Three of the most popular systems include the ‘twin clic’, ‘top clic’, and the ‘clic to clic’. If you’re unsure about which is the easiest to install for your level of expertise, do be sure to chat through the options with your local supplier who should be more than happy to advise you. Some systems recommend the use of glue as well as the tongue in groove system. Whilst this may be more labour intensive, this method is widely regarded as superior and longer-lasting.

All marketers realize the importance of having a well designed showroom due to the fact an attractive environment with outstanding demonstration of good quality products will surely attract the interests of the clients.

The look of the interiors must be done based on your necessities along with the current market trend. As a result, several showroom owners employ skilled makers to design showrooms. If you are thinking of getting your shop’s interiors beautified, merely go through the following points.

Style plays an important role in Interior design. You can pick any type of background belonging to various periods, such as: Gothic, Victorian, Minimalist, Islamic, Indian, Feng Sui, Chinese, Country, African, Tropical, Modern and Western. It describes the look of the settings.

Subsequently, you have to complement shades with the chosen setting. Azure, red, rose red, lavender, mauve, baby pink, indigo and golden yellow are colors that rule the markets! Moreover, match up these colors with elegant, traditional or modern textures like, old mahogany wood, braided rugs, Afghan, cross-stitch and beach sand to design showrooms.

Finally, furnishings and furniture summarize the whole look. Ensure that your windows are made of soft shaded wood and covered with sheer curtains to let in sunlight. You may utilize jute draperies on light, net made drapes for your showroom. Place heavy but transportable, teak made, dark colored display cabinets inside. These cabinets should be lit with vivid lights while, the rest of the showroom should have dim lights! You can also add oak drawers and chests! They complement your interior design.
